I still am having the same issues – I can read dvds but not cds which of course means I can’t install most applications. Hewlett Packard Enterprise International. Hi everyone, I have been fighting with my cd rom for the last 3 days to include working with HP support. In the end I think I need an Apple! The driver was already missing, or corrupt. The firmware doesn’t work it is a conflict between windows and the driver or DVD. This is absolutely a nightmare.

Once you have uninstalled them. It kept telling me that there was an issue with the drive. If you have Nero uninstall it before doing all of this and reinstall it.
It actually apparently comes down to a bug in Windows itself software and yet despite the numerous complaints Microsoft apparently has no intention of coming up with a permenant fix for this problem for all of us. My computer would detect the drive but wasnt able to use it. When I update from windows or nero I choose custom instalation and it is true that when I have updated itunes it starts again with the problems so no updates while it works. The only way it works in my case is by not downloading any windows updates specially the windows player ones. I even changed the DVD unit and the problem started again and it does come and go after uninstalling and doing the the following: If you look almost anywhere on the net you will find thousands no millions of people complaining that they are losing their DVD drivers from all manufacturers and models. I tried several expensive different DVDs and it is a software conflict for sure.

Sorry but you have to save and reboot again. The regedit workaround worked like a charm I only had the ‘Lower’ enry.

The only driver I found is the attached. If you have “LowerFilter” do the same, delete it. Cannot install from CD.
The fix that has been posted does work but keep it close. I was recently having some trouble with my DVD Drive too.
The regedit that Rich lists worked for me. I had to call tech support like Monika Before doing anything else, you can try this simple process: I just wanted to say that the regedit process worked for me as well! Fernando, I contacted hp helpdesk support center and all they have done is tell me to take it back to hp service, they have already changed my DVD drive to a different model and my laptop is a dv and it is just 2 years old, I had the same problem with the previous DVD and the new one they have installed too.
I have had this problem off and on for a while.
Went through the basic steps to try and solve the issue. There must be some driver missing or something because I have tried with different programs to record, Nero, Windows, sonic and even changed the DVD, it is something with my pavillion dv and the windows home XP.
